Sasha Grey, the love interest in 'Space Bound,' offers her interpretation of the video
Eminem recently premiered his latest video for the song “Space Bound.”
The song, similar in melody to “Love the Way You Lie,” expresses the rapper’s heartbreak over a breakup with a girl he thought was his true love.
The video, directed by Joseph Kahn, is violent and graphic at times and splits Eminem into two people: angry and mellow. The mellow, “lost puppy” Eminem becomes heartbroken after he finds his girlfriend, played by ex-porn star Sasha Grey, is cheating. His knowledge of her cheating girlfriend pushes him over the edge.
The once calm Eminem is now angry and attempts to strangle his girlfriend to death. After throwing her to the ground, he finds she’s no longer there. It is then he is unable to bare the situation and takes a gun and shoots himself. Both he and the alternate Eminem, who never interfered with the situation, fall backwards.
The story gets a twist, however, when all the events rewind to the beginning of the video, bringing it to its conclusion.
What really happened? Was it all just in his head?
Grey, the love interest in the video, explained to MTV News that she believes the rapper was trying to demonstrate a realistic depiction of a relationship, surrounded in violence, gone wrong.
The video touches on the subject of domestic violence like “Love the Way You Lie,” but this time there were deadly consequences.
"Em simply becomes company for her, and she mistakenly takes advantage of that," she said of the damaged relationship between her character and Eminem’s character. "Before each take, Joseph [Kahn] and I would talk a lot about her motives and attitude. Her ultimate moment doesn't come until the end, so I had plenty of time to build the fear!"
Grey says one version depicts the character as himself and the other as his subconscious, but she adds that you can “read into it a few different ways.”
Fans suggest the video is yet another interpretation of his tumultuous relationship with ex-wife Kim Mathers, but Grey offers her own explanation for the ultimate message he's trying to convey.
"I don't know if it necessarily has a thorough message,” she concluded. “But I think it shows that even the strongest of love meets destruction at some point. Whether or not you come out of it together and whole is an entirely different question."
